Social Media Trends for Businesses in 2023.

We are only four months into 2023, and we're already seeing new social media trends emerge - especially those that have a direct impact on small businesses.

1. Social media platforms are being used more often than search engines.

A recent survey done by HubSpot revealed that "24% of consumers between 18-54 years old already search for brands on social media platforms more often than through search engines. This shoots up to 36% among Gen Z."

If your business is not active on social media, there is a very big chance that your customers will not be finding you (or engaging with you) at all. This doesn't mean you should be sharing irrelevant content on all social media platforms, just so that you appear to be active online. Instead, make sure that you look at your target audience and create a content strategy that aligns with their online behaviour, demographics and interests.

2. Social media is the platform of choice for online shoppers.

Social media platforms are increasingly becoming shopping destinations, and businesses that use social commerce will have a significant advantage in 2023. This year, you can expect to see more brands selling products directly on Facebook and Instagram and more customers making purchases without leaving the app.

3. Virtual and Augmented reality.

As technology advances, we can start to see an increase in how businesses and consumers engage with augmented reality. AR provides businesses with an opportunity to create immersive experiences for their customers, including virtual try-ons for fashion and beauty products, virtual tours of properties and interactive product demos.

4. Video content will continue to grow.

This year, short-form video content will see the highest return on investment. It is the preferred format for Gen Z and Millennials to learn about a new product and platforms like TikTok, YouTube and Instagram reels will remain the most popular among these audiences.

5. Authentic and relatable content will stand out.

In previous years, high-quality and polished content was seen as more valuable across all social media platforms. This year, we will see a change towards content that is more authentic and relatable. Audiences want to see content that showcases a brand's values and beliefs and provides a behind-the-scenes look at how a business operates.

6. Employee advocacy will step into the spotlight.

Over the last few years, we have seen a decrease in organic reach across social media platforms (and an obvious increase in paid advertisements). This decrease has forced employee advocacy to step into the spotlight. Companies who have already implemented an advocacy program have seen an increase in brand awareness and thought leadership and this year, brand advocacy will become a prominent method into building a brand's online presence within a specific industry.

As social media continues to play a significant role in how businesses connect with customers in 2023, brands that stay up to date with the latest trends and provide authentic content will have a major advantage. By leveraging the power of social media, we can help your business build a stronger relationship with your customers and stay ahead of your competitors within your industry.
